The owner of the great works seen in the film is afflicted with insomnia, and uses chloroform. His daughter, Eva, loves young Dennison, her father's engineer, much to the chagrin of Briggs, the works' manager. The latter uses every endeavor to belittle Ralph in the eyes of his sweetheart, and is present at the inspection of a huge chimney under course of repair. Eva and her father are also present, and Briggs insinuates that Ralph is afraid, when Eva dissuades him from journeying to the top of the shaft. On the way home, Eva's little brother forms one of the party, and Ralph, ever willing, is prevailed upon to procure a ball of cord for the youngster's kite; also the usual modicum of drugs for Eva's father. Briggs, during the absence of the younger man, forces his attentions on Eva while she is boating with her brother, and is repulsed.

Fanny, a reporter specializing in social gossip, unwittingly stumbles upon an environmental scandal involving a powerful politician. When her not very subtle investigations draw too much attention, she is sent to a tiny off shore island for her own safety. Here she meets Hagen, an uncouth bird enthusiast. He is a man of few words and nearly driven to distraction by this newly arrived reporter woman with her endless chatter. Fanny, driven by her curiosity of a journalist, tries to find out more about Hagen and gradually realizes that there is much more to him than his rough exterior. When she confides in him and tells him her real reason for being on the island, they find that they have much in common.

After many years of happy marriage, Juliane and her husband Max have grown apart and are now close to divorce. Actually, the two still understand each other quite well, but when Max shows up at the graduation party of their son together with his much younger girlfriend, it comes to a scandal. Annoyed and disappointed by her still-husband, Juliane travels to Tuscany, where she meets the German olive grower Nikolaus. From the first moment, it seems to spark huge between the two. But when Max shows up, old feelings come back to life.

The work is hard but fulfilling: since the death of her parents, the dairy farmer Klara has single-handedly tried to keep the family farm afloat in the Eifel province. But the milk prices are in the basement, business is bad, and Klara cannot get a new loan. The idealistic young woman has no choice: she will have to sell her beloved farm. In this situation, after a long time, she made contact with her sister Mika, who lives as a successful gallery owner in fashionable Dsseldorf. The two women could hardly be more unequal. However, they are completely in agreement on one point: namely that the other has no idea what "real" life really is. But now the career woman Mika finally sees the chance to steer her sister's life in new directions. Without further ado, she invites Klara over - which she soon regrets, because with Klara the full country life finds its way into the stylish designer apartment.

Young Amelia learns from her mother Magda that she was adopted as a baby. Her biological parents are from Ireland.
